Sixteen year-old Zamal Khan who represented Guyana in the Juvenile category at the
Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships 2016 held in St. Lucia, on Sunday last rode away with the Commander Birthday Cycle Road Race in Berbice.
The event which was staged in observance of Divisional Commander of ‘B’ Division, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam was organised by the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) and only attracted Berbicians.
The 35-mile event pedaled off at 09:00hrs from the Rose Hall Town Arch, proceeded to the Felix Austin Police Training College at Adventure before finishing at Main and Alexander Streets, New Amsterdam.
Khan who enjoyed a five minute head start as a result of his juvenile status, made the most of it, completely dominating the event as he was never caught to win in 55 Minutes; he also rode away with all eight prime point prizes that were up for grabs.
Second was Curtis Dey followed by Joshua Cameron, Syborne Fernandes, Samuel Mootoo and Wasim Hassnu. Khan also took the prize for being the top juvenile. Tamika Teixeira was the winner of the female category. Fernandes finished first among the veterans.
There was a special race among BMX riders which was held from Stanleytown to Main and Alexander Streets, immediately after the senior race.
Jaikarran Bhagwandin won that event ahead of a Jonathan Ramsuchit, Kenroy Daniels and Keon Douglas in that order. Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Commander Amsterdam congratulated the respective winners whilst thanking all for participating.
He also thanked Randolph Roberts for the work he is doing among the youths in keeping them meaningfully occupied and off the streets especially in the field of cycling. Roberts also received a special reward from the Commander.
Overseas based cyclist and long serving member of the FACC Franco Crawford who participated in the event on a special cycle was also given a special award by the members of the FACC for his long dedicated, unselfish and continuous support to the club and the Guyanese community over the years.
Commander Amsterdam, since his posting to Berbice has come up with many initiatives which have helped in the reduction of crime. Sports, Education and Community development are among the issues being dealt with while a number of youth, sports, community policing, scouts and other groups have been formed or have received assistance from the Police Force.
