The Guyana Market Vendors’ Union is calling on the Town Clerk of the Georgetown Mayor and City
Council Royston King to meet with them in order to lay the foundation to begin working with vendors with a view to improving their circumstances, including the conditions under which they work.
Union President Eon Andrews said that the GVU has written twice to the Town Clerk, requesting to meet with him primarily to introduce the leadership of the Union and to establish a mechanism for reliable channels of communication in matters relating to the welfare of stallholders.
To these requests, the Union said that the Town Clerk has responded by requesting that it submits a slew of documents as a prerequisite for having a meeting. According to Andrews, the request is uncalled for since the status of the meeting does not go beyond that of a courtesy call. He said that the Town Clerk ought to be satisfied with a credential attesting to the legitimacy of the Union.
“The union is of the view that the condition outlined by the Town Clerk, in our view, considers it important that nothing stands between him and his fixation with controlling the hapless vendors.”
Andrews pointed to a recent article which stated that an agreement had been reached between “the vendors” and “the council” pertaining to procedures associated with trading including those pertaining to disposal of trading waste.
The Union President added that there had been talk from the Council calling for there to be a committee set up to represent vendors, and to negotiate to improve their standards and to identify and appoint marshals from among themselves to assist in keeping the area clean and tidy.
“While the union is unaware of this arrangement we wish to make it clear that we are supportive of any initiative that seeks to improve the environment in which the vendors work while adhering to the standards and requirements set by the Georgetown municipality.
Andrews said that it is against this backdrop that the GVU is already engaging and speaking for its members and wish to make clear our intention to continue to do so.
