– Rehab of the engine to be completed this weekend
The Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MPI) is currently addressing the irregular electricity service being experienced by residents of Bartica in Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni).
This was according to the Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, yesterday.
The Minister said that while three aging generators operate in the community, one of these was recently taken off for overhauling.
He explained that it was during this overhauling process, that a second of the remaining engines developed a fault, thus, leading to an insufficient supply of electricity.
However, as an interim measure, a set from Onverwagt, West Coast Berbice, has been relocated to Bartica.
He added that the rehabilitations of the overhauled engine are slated for completion by this weekend. Additionally, $1.5M is being spent to rent a piece of land to accommodate the temporary set. Due to urgency, the need for land was not publicly advertised.
The failure of these two engines in Bartica has led to an untenable situation. The Minister said that he is seeking the understanding and patience of the residents of Bartica. He added that the Ministry apologises for the inconveniences the mining community is experiencing.
Bartica is located up the Essequibo River, in Region Seven and is a main gateway to the mining and logging areas.
Residents are currently facing scheduled blackouts as the repair works continue.
