Statistician Charwayne Walker reminisces on the 1976 tour of American basketball side Buffalo All Stars.
Guyanese die hard basketball fans will never forget the year 1976 because in July of that year they got a taste of basketball that was never seen at the local level before. The performers were the visiting Buffalo All Stars Semi- Professional team from the U.S.A. The Americans’ line up included players of the caliber of semi-professions John Bellein, Gary Gross, Donald Hargraves, Edward Robuta and Bill Leonard. The Guyanese outstanding players were Ravens’ Aubrey Chalmers, Phillip Daniels, Merton Ftizalbert, his elder brother Melroy and skipper Mike Brusche.
Game One: Buffalo All Stars vs Guyana National Team.
Venue: National Sports Hall
Result: Buffalo All Stars won 68 to 61. Gary Gross had a game high 22 points, Bill Leonard 12 pts, Donald Hargraves 10 pts and Edward Robuta 10 pts. For Guyana, Ravens’ Aubrey Chalmers top scored with 19 pts, club mate Phillip Daniels 16 pts and Eagles’ Merton Fitzalbert 13 pts.
Game Two:
Venue: National Sports Hall
Results: Buffalo All Stars won 82 to 50. For the winners Donald Hargraves had a game high 20 pts, JohnBellein 17 pts and Edward Robuta 15 pts. For Guyana Aubrey Chalmers was excellent again with a top score of 15 pts, Phillip Daniels 8 pts and Melroy Fitzalbert 8pts.
