– One recaptured in Corentyne
Police have recaptured one of three inmates, who used a cutlass and a few pieces of wood from a bed to break out of the Juvenile Holding Centre at Sophia, around 05:00 hrs yesterday.
The teens reportedly dug a hole in the lower flat of the concrete building to get out of Cell Two where they then scaled a fence. The ranks guarding the facility were reportedly “sound asleep”.
According to the police, one of the teens was recaptured at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne.
The teen, who hails from Adventure, Essequibo, was on remand for robbery under-arms. The other two escapees – who hail from Georgetown and Berbice – were on remand for simple larceny and break and enter and larceny.
When this newspaper visited the centre yesterday, an inmate shouted from inside his cell that the escapees made a few sharp objects from their bed frame and used them to make holes in the concrete wall. The young man said that the men spent the entire night creating their escape route.
It was around 06:30 yesterday that police ranks on duty observed that the inmates were missing and raised an alarm.
The centre is used to house minor offenders. It is monitored by the Guyana Police Force.
