Janeil Howard, one of the men accused of throwing a grenade next to a vehicle belonging to Kaieteur News publisher, Glenn Lall that was parked on Saffon Street, Georgetown, has denied giving a detective part of a statement which was tendered in court yesterday, for identification purposes.
Howard, 20, of 322 Section ‘C’ Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara; Alfie Garraway, 36, of Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown; and Leroy Williams, 25, of 11 Durban Backlands, are accused of conspiring together with other persons to cause an explosion by way of grenade, likely to endanger lives and cause damage to property.
The offence allegedly occurred on June 4.
Garraway was granted $300,000 bail by the High Court. The other accused remain on remand.
The three-page statement was taken from the accused by Detective Sergeant Hubert Henry at the Ruimveldt Police Station. However, Howard told Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan that he did not tell Sergeant Henry what was written on the third page. The accused said that he signed his name to the contents on both sides of the first sheet of paper.
As a result the Chief Magistrate indicated that the court will commence a Voir Dire (trial within a trial) to inquire into the circumstances under which the statement was given.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Kevin Das and Sergeant Henry testified as to their roles in the investigation.
Attorney Neil Bollers, who is representing Leroy Williams, asked the Magistrate to consider granting bail to his client. The lawyer stated that there is no need to keep his client incarcerated. Howard, who remains unrepresented, also pleaded with the court to consider bail for him.
But Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers opposed bail for the accused citing the seriousness of the offence and the fact that they were being afforded a speedy trial.
These objections were upheld by the Chief Magistrate who agreed that the accused are being given a speedy trial.
The personal diary of Police Constable Darren La Rose was also tendered to the court. Constable La Rose, also stationed at the Ruimveldt Police Station, had testified on Thursday.
The PI has been adjourned until next Wednesday, September 14, when several police witnesses are scheduled to take the stand.
According to reports, on the day in question, a security staffer heard an unusual sound coming from near Lall’s vehicle PRR 8398, which was parked on the western side of Saffon Street. On checking the front of the vehicle, the staffer spotted a grenade lying near one of the front tyres.
Video footage from the company’s CCTV cameras showed a grey-coloured vehicle, slowing as it approached Lall’s vehicle. The driver accelerated after the explosive device was thrown.
Shemar Wilson also known as ‘Abdue’ is still wanted by the police for questioning in relation to the grenade attack. He is 20 years of age and his last known addresses have been given as 43 North Sophia and 51 West La Penitence, Georgetown.
