A 67-year-old woman of New Henrietta Housing Scheme on the Essequibo Coast, and three of her relatives are now homeless, after a fire of unknown origin gutted the pensioner’s property yesterday afternoon.
The fire reportedly started in the upper flat of the two-storey structure.
Sahara Sukhai resided at the premises with her daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.
Neighbours who rescued Mrs. Sukhai, disclosed that sometime after 14:00 hrs yesterday, they noticed flames shooting from the upper flat of the woman’s home and immediately called for her.
The woman was resting somewhere downstairs.
Checks were made and it was discovered that the fire had started to quickly engulf the building. Neighbours said that Mrs. Sukhai had workers who were installing grills on the upper flat of the building at the time.
As the fire was ravaging the building, a phone call was made to the fire service at Anna Regina which responded promptly but was unable to salvage anything.
Mrs. Sukhai was unable to determine the loss she suffered, but confirmed that everything she possessed was gone.
The pensioner had also recently lost her son.
She said she had acquired her house almost 12 years ago. She is unsure how she will recover from this sudden loss.
