Defence counsel Adrian Thompson yesterday submitted a no-case submission in relation to the
evidence presented in the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the murder of social activist, Courtney Crum-Ewing.
The attorney is representing the accused, Regan Rodrigues also known as ‘’Grey Boy’’ a resident of Riverview, Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
Rodrigues is appearing before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Courtney Crum-Ewing was killed on March 10, 2015. The body of the 40- year-old Ewing was found at the Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara with two gunshots to the temple, one to the back of the head and twice in his stomach. Police in a statement said that the killer (s) used a .32 pistol to execute the political activist.
Minutes before he was gunned down, he was reportedly heard via bullhorn urging residents of the community to vote against the then ruling party, People’s Progressive Party/Civic .
Earlier this year, Rodrigues, a father of three, was jailed for three years by City Magistrate Fabayo Azore for escaping from police custody. On July 13, 2015 at Riverview, Ruimveldt,
After the police conducted a search at Rodrigues’ home, the weapon suspected to have been used to kill Crum-Ewing was found hidden under a chair in the home of the accused.
Yesterday during a brief hearing into the case, Rodrigues’ lawyer pointed out that there is insufficient evidence to prove that his client should be accountable for the charge laid before him. But Magistrate Latchman noted that she will have to review the evidence to determine whether this is so. As such the matter was adjourned until September 14.
On that date the Magistrate is expected to make her final ruling on the matter.
