All is set for the Lennox Blackmoore National Intermediate boxing competition which starts at the
National Gymnasium tomorrow. Action commences at 7:00pm and fans can be assured of an entertaining three days of action.
The Guyana Defence Force has upped the ante, informing that they are coming full force to challenge closest rival the Republican Gym. The GDF disclosed that it will field a 30-man strong team that is capable of retaining the Champion Gym title dwarfing the 20 member team presented by the Republicans on Tuesday. The size of the GDF contingent indicates its intention to retain the coveted title.
On Tuesday the Republicans revealed that their main threat was the feared middleweight Geraldo Phillips and welterweight Joshua Joseph, Best Boxer in the National Novice. However, the army has countered with threats of its own.
The soldiers said flyweight Don Cumberbatch, lightweights Travis Hubbard and Jamal Brisport, junior welterweight Colin Hinds and light heavyweight Renaldo Niles have been whipped into shape by AIBA certified Three Star coach Terrence ‘Cool’ Poole and are determined to halt any attempt at a Republican invasion.
The Republicans claimed the title in 2014 after upstaging the Guyana Defence Force at the East Ruimveldt Community Centre Ground (California Square). They were then coached by Wincell ‘Nacker’ Thomas and literally assaulted the soldiers in every department inside the ring to earn the coveted title.
The army rebounded to wrestle the title back last year. However, the Republican Camp has promised to give them another California Square experience because they are coming with vengeance in mind to upstage the army.
The Republicans have been turning in excellent performances which many have attributed to the support given by Prison Director Carl Graham.
The National Intermediate competition will commence tomorrow evening at the National Gymnasium begging at 7:00pm and fans are being encouraged to come out and support the young boxers and in the process be entertained with a choc-full of action.
Over eight gyms from across the country, including two from Linden, and 70 boxers would be participating.
