– Nat’l Accreditation Council
The North Shore Medical Institute, which is located on Lamaha Street, Georgetown, is now under intense
scrutiny since the Administrator – who goes by several aliases – was taken in police custody on Tuesday last, for allegations of fraud, amongst other accusations.
The Administrator, commonly called Nanda Kissoon, is who parents have described as a “regular suspect” in medical school scams throughout the country within the last decade or so. The police, after being alerted by students, parents and media operatives on Tuesday last, had to use a ladder to gain entry into the building to arrest the woman since she refused to adhere to a request to come downstairs.
She had locked in two students along with herself in the building apparently to “wait it out”. This of course, did not sit well with the students and parents who were adamant to retrieve their monies which were paid as instalments prior to the commencement of the courses some eight to 10 months ago.
The National Accreditation Council (NAC) was contacted yesterday to ascertain whether or not the school was accredited. It was revealed by the Executive Director, Deborah Jack, that the school – North Shore Medical Institute – was in the process of registering, however that process was not completed.
Jack explained that the process is one that is lengthy and takes time. She added that the school was defintiely not supposed to start its enrolment process.
The Executive Director was asked specifically whether any action will be taken by the
NAC in this matter, to which she stated that the Council can only act within the confines of its Act, which is to say whether the school is registered or not.
It is still unclear if there is any regulatory body set up specifically to deal with these ‘fly-by-night’ organisations that emerge from the woodwork.
However, a Medical Practitioner, who requested anonymity, said that there are loopholes in the system which are being exploited by persons who are “hell-bent on preying on desperate persons hoping to achieve a better life,”
Meanwhile, Minister of Public Health, Dr George Norton, was asked to comment on the matter. He told this publication that since the matter is an alleged fraud, the Ministry will play no role in any investigation and it is a matter for the Guyana Police Force.
The Minister was reminded that these students who were allegedly scammed, are aspiring Medical Practitioners who will one day – if all goes well – fill the gaps within the local Health Sector. It was based on that context, that Dr. Norton said that persons – as well as himself – need to be more careful and “practice due diligence” so as not to fall prey to these sort of activities.
Contacted for an update on the investigation, ‘A’ Division Commander (Acting), Marlon Chapman said that the administrator is still in police custody and the investigation is ongoing.
Kaieteur News was informed by another police source that ranks from the Fraud Squad are handling the case.
