A fire of still unknown origin on Tuesday evening took the life of a 64-year-old disabled man who lived with his 95-year-old mother at Adelphi Village East Canje Berbice. The elderly woman was rescued by one of her grandsons.
Dead is Parsram Samaroo called “Isaac.” Samaroo who has reportedly been ill for about 10 years could not walk and had to be assisted by other relatives. He sometimes moved about by his buttocks. The charred remains of Samaroo were subsequently recovered from the rubble by the police and fire service and taken away.
His mother Cherryann Mangru, who was rescued, stated that her son would sleep downstairs in a shack that she had built for him since he could not walk and would hardly move about. She said that she was with him earlier and subsequently retired to bed. She was awakened by intense heat. The woman said that as she attempted to escape the blaze, her grandson who resides next door jumped the fence and lifted her to safety. The woman mothered nine children (all boys), but only three are alive.
The woman continuously cried for her son.
Her grandson, 25-year-old Raymond Mangru, said he was asleep when he was awakened by a sudden heat. Looking outside he saw his grandmother’s house on fire. The kitchen area was already consumed. He said that he rushed next door to take the elderly woman to safety before returning to help residents who had formed a bucket brigade.
According to the police they received a call around 22:45 hours that a house at Adelphi was on fire. Racing to the scene they arrived at the location to see the cottage measuring 16 ft. x 9 ft fully engulfed in flames. A shack just to the front of the building where Samaroo reportedly lived was already consumed. A Land Rover from the nearby Rose Hall Estate arrived around the same time, followed shortly by two tenders from the Guyana Fire Service.
Although hampered by the location of the building, the firemen worked rapidly to extinguish the fire. They managed to contain it to the one building.
No one could give a cause of the fire, but it is reported that Samaroo would sometimes smoke.
Investigations are ongoing.
