Twenty-eight year-old Latchman Samaroo was on Tuesday freed of a murder charge after a no
case submission presented on his behalf was upheld by Justice JoAnn Barlow.
Samaroo, a fishmonger and father of four, of 45 Bacchus Street, Rosignol Village, West Bank Berbice, was accused of murdering his 51-year-old uncle-in-law Surijpaul Ramnarine, of Blairmont, on Saturday December 13, 2014, at Rosignol, following an ongoing feud.
Ramnarine was allegedly stabbed in the chest around 12:10 hrs on the day in question. The incident took place at a wake which was being held for Ramnarine’s mother.
The suspect and Ramnarine were embroiled in an argument, which escalated into a fight. It was alleged that the accused took out a 12-inch knife and stabbed Ramnarine, before fleeing the scene.
Samaroo gave himself up a few days later at the Blairmont Police Station. He had pleaded not guilty to the murder. He was facing a trial for the offence before Justice Barlow and a mixed jury at the Berbice High Court.
However on Tuesday, Samaroo’s Attorney Gaumattie Singh argued that there was no case for her client to answer. The Attorney submitted that there were a number of issues associated with the case that was presented by State Prosecutor Stacy Goodings.
After hearing and reviewing the Attorney’s argument, the judge ruled in favour of the no case submission, setting Samaroo free of the murder charge.
