A popular Water Street money-changer, who was on his way to work, was shot and robbed shortly
before 10:00 hrs yesterday.
The man, 40-year-old Mahendra Deonarine aka Dharmendra, had just disembarked from a speedboat and was walking out of the Georgetown Ferry Stelling when a man approached him, whipped out a handgun, and fired a single shot hitting him in the abdomen.
Deonarine’s assailant relieved him of a haversack which contained an undisclosed sum of local and foreign currency, before proceeding to search his pockets, and then hurriedly left the scene on a motorcycle.
According to an eyewitness, the bandit had braids (plaited hair) and was of medium build.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the eyewitness said that she was close by, when she heard a loud explosion and upon seeing a man with a gun, she said she immediately took cover.
Another eyewitness, a taxi driver, said that when Deonarine was shot, everyone scattered and the Stelling enclosure was emptied in a matter of seconds.
Meanwhile, a close associate of Deonarine opined that the man was being monitored and was trailed prior to the robbery, as it was a norm for him (Deonarine) to leave his Plantain Walk, West Bank Demerara home for work at around 09:00 hrs to ply his trade at the corner of America and Water Streets.
After Deonarine was shot, public-spirited persons rushed him to a private city hospital where he was admitted.
This publication understands that the money-changer underwent a successful surgery yesterday evening and is currently recovering. Investigations are ongoing.
