The detained 22-year-old relative of murder victim Anita Mohan has told police that he and a friend
accidentally killed Mohan during a disagreement over payment for drugs.
Kaieteur News understands that the suspect claims that he and an associate, who is still at large, had gone to Mohan’s home earlier in the afternoon to purchase marijuana.
They returned later in the evening for more of the weed, but a quarrel reportedly ensued between them and Mohan over payment.
One of the men reportedly struck 48-year-old Mohan on the head with a ‘belna’ (rolling pin).
Kaieteur News understands that the relative claimed that they had merely intended to render their victim unconscious.
However, Mohan succumbed to her injuries, and the relative reportedly made off with a small sum of cash from the premises.
Police recovered the bloody rolling pin from the scene.
Initial reports had indicated that Mohan was stabbed and chopped.
An autopsy is likely to be performed today. Police are still to locate the alleged accomplice, who resides in the same neighbourhood as the victim.
The relative, known as ‘Chucky’, was detained almost immediately after Mohan’s body was found in her kitchen last Sunday.
Detectives had observed that he was acting strangely. When the ranks arrived, the relative reportedly had a knife and claimed that he was going to look for the ‘killer.’
They reportedly learnt that he had bought the knife that same day. He also appeared to be the last person to have seen Mohan alive, but was giving conflicting statements about his whereabouts at the time of the murder.
In a brief statement on Monday, police said that homicide detectives assigned to the case “are already in the process of seeking legal advice in the matter.”
“A suspect has confessed to the crime and has given vital information of an accomplice, who investigators are making diligent efforts to apprehend.”
The body of Anita Mohan was found in the kitchen of her two-storey home at 315 South East Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, by her 27-year-old son.
Intiaz Khan said he discovered his mother’s body around 16:45 hrs when he arrived home.
