Ahead of the commencement of a Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the matter, one of the three men
implicated in the June 4, 2016 grenade attack on Kaieteur News, has been granted bail.
The PI is scheduled to commence before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on September 8.
According to information obtained by Kaieteur News, 36-year-old Alfie Garraway was granted bail in the sum of $300,000 by High Court Judge James Bovell-Drakes on September 1, last. Kaieteur News understands that the petition for bail was made by Attorney -at- law, Shawn Bancroft last month.
Garraway, a trader, of Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown; Joneil Howard, 20, a labourer, of 322 Section ‘C’ Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara, and Leroy Williams, 25, a clothes vendor, of 11 Durban Backlands, Georgetown, were all charged for the attack on Kaieteur News.
According to the allegation, they unlawfully and maliciously conspired together with other persons to cause an explosion by way of grenade likely to endanger lives and cause damage to Kaieteur News’ 24 Saffon Street, Charlestown, Georgetown property.
They were not required to plead to the indictable charge.
At a previous hearing, Garraway was represented by Attorney-at-law, Glenn Hanoman but the other two accused had no legal representation.
It was reported that on the day in question, a security staffer heard an unusual sound near the vehicle of publisher of Kaieteur News, Glenn Lall, which was parked on the western side of Saffon Street. On checking the front of the vehicle, the staffer spotted the grenade lying near one of the front tyres.
Video footage from the company’s CCTV cameras showed a grey-coloured vehicle slowing as it approached Lall’s vehicle. The driver accelerated after the explosive device was thrown
Meanwhile, Shemar Wilson, also known as ‘Abdue’, is still wanted by the police for questioning in relation to the grenade attack. He is 20 years of age and his last known addresses were 43 North Sophia and 51 West La Penitence, Georgetown.
