A businessman who is alleged to have trafficked two women – and had them dancing and performing
sexual acts with men in exchange for money – was yesterday released on $1M bail after he made an appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Dwayne Forde, a 36-year-old bar owner, of East Bush Lot Housing Scheme, Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast, is accused of participating in two counts trafficking in Persons (TIP). He allegedly recruited, transported and harboured a Guyanese and Venezuelan national for the purpose of sexual exploitation between August 18 and 30.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail to the tune of $500,000 on each count.
The defendant’s attorney, Stanley Moore made an application for his client to be released on reasonable bail. Moore told the court that his client has been fully co-operating with the police investigation. The lawyer pointed out that the defendant voluntarily surrendered to the police after he became aware that he was wanted for questioning.
He assured the court that Forde will attend all court hearings because he is anxious to vindicate himself. However, Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers opposed bail for the defendant citing the prevalence and nature of the offence. Jeffers also pointed out the penalty that the offence attracts.
But Moore explained that the penalty attached to the offence is not a ground for bail to be refused. The lawyer said that the prosecutor should provide statistical evidence to support his objections.
Jeffers indicated that the case file is complete. However, he said that investigations are still on-going and other charges are likely to be instituted against the defendant.
This matter was adjourned until September 13 in the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.
