Robbery suspect Jamal Junior Munroe was shot on Saturday morning during an altercation with ranks of an anti-crime patrol in Berbice who went to arrest him.
Munroe, called ‘Ocku,’ 23, of Lot 31 Savannah Park New Amsterdam, was wounded in the abdomen, but still managed to flee into some nearby bushes.
He subsequently turned up at the New Amsterdam Hospital from where he was transported to the Georgetown Hospital in a critical condition.
Munroe was out on bail after being charged with several offences.
According to information, at approximately 03:30 hrs the ranks of the anti-crime patrol spotted the suspect in the house.
Upon realizing that he was cornered, the fugitive allegedly jumped through a window. He landed in the path of one of the ranks and the two had a scuffle during which Munroe was shot. He eventually jumped over a drain and fled into some nearby bushes.
He was subsequently found seriously wounded at the New Amsterdam Hospital with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.
The suspect, who had lost a considerable amount of blood, was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
He has previous charges of break and enter and larceny, simple larceny, robbery under arms and throwing missiles among others.
It is alleged that on March 21, at Nicolay Street, New Amsterdam, Munroe and others robbed Lloyd Butchey of a gold chain, a Samsung Galaxy Smartphone and $12,000 in cash.
Another charge is that on March 31, at Lot 56 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam Berbice, Munroe and an accomplice broke into the home of Erica Hope and stole two laptops, two cell phones and a DVD player.
Upon seeing the virtual complainant, Munroe allegedly fled with the items. He subsequently texted and called the woman.
Munroe was placed on $100,000 bail on each charge.
Munroe was allegedly part of a gang that was responsible for the prison fracas that occurred in the New Amsterdam Prison in 2014 in which inmate Azumulla, and other high profile prisoners Quammy Bhagwandin, Clarence Williams called ‘Wild Hog’, and Davendra Harrichand called ‘Bara’ were subsequently injured.
He was charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. He was also charged with robbing a Guyana Defence Force Lieutenant of one apple cell phone.
He is further charged with burglary committed on the home of a woman and her son who are both school teachers at Harkman’s Lane, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Munroe who was on bail had fled the area. He was subsequently nabbed in Georgetown with narcotics and was placed on $20,000 bail. He was unable to post the bail and was remanded to prison.
He had given his name as ‘Junior Munroe’ and gave a wrong address.
However, a prison officer who knew the convict spotted him in the Georgetown Prison and alerted the authorities. He was thus escorted to Berbice to face the multitude of charges.
He was on bail again when he committed a number of other crimes.
