Boodie, Foo hit tons in Berbice
By Sean Devers
Questionable tactics in their run chase from East Bank after off-spinner Ershad Ali had captured a League best 7-62 in a losing cause, handed West Demerara their first win when their second round GCB Jaguars three-day Franchise League match ended at Everest yesterday.
Set an improbable 330 to win in 79 overs on a slow track which kept low, after West Dem carried their overnight 164-5 to 236 just before lunch, East Bank were bowled out for 129 at 15:41hrs to lose by 201 runs five minutes before a heavy downpour began.
A draw would have given both teams three points plus their batting and bowling points. But after Vishaul Singh, the only batsman with the temperament to bat all day, was run out by a sharp piece of fielding by Richie Looknauth for a 41 ball 21 with four boundaries, the others batted in t20 mode and paid the price for not understanding they were required to bat ‘time’ instead of trying to score as quickly as possible.
Scores: W/Dem 253 & 236, E/Bank 160 & 129
Resuming yesterday, West Demerara, beaten by East Coast in the first round, lost their last five wickets for 72 runs with Raymon Reifer taking his overnight 24 to 38 before he was removed by Colin Benn.
Romario Shepherd followed his five-wicket haul with a quick-fire 24-ball 32 with three-fours and a six before he was removed by Ali, who ended the innings by getting rid of Mahendra Dhanpaul (5) to finish with eight wickets in the game for East Bank who began their reply with emphasis more on trying to bat out the day than going for a win.
Bajan Reifer swung the ball both ways and struck thrice in quick succession to rip out the top order and leave East Bank on 22-3.
Singh cut Shepherd behind point for four before stroking the pacer nonchalantly down the ground and flicking him for consecutive boundaries in an over which cost 14.
The left hander, selected for the Windies ‘A’ team tour to Sri Lanka, punched Reifer for four and looked rock solid.
He and Steven Jacobs joined forces at a time when a big partnership was needed but that did not happen although Jacobs got off the mark with an imperious short arm jab past mid-on for four off Reifer.
Shepherd ran in hard and banged one in short and had the tall Jacobs going on his toes to ‘ride’ it down. But Jacobs (7) was soon LBW to Dhanpaul at 35-4 and when Singh was run out two runs later it was always going to be an early day for West Demerara.
Sherfane Rutherford plundered Dhanpaul for three boundaries in an over but was dropped on 22 off Looknauth in the deep by Reifer. But that did not deter the pugnacious left-hander from riding his luck. A mighty sweep was miss-timed and trickled to the ropes while another miscued shot off Looknauth went for a one-bounce four.
While Rutherford entertained the small crowd it was not the type of innings needed at that point and talented youngster never suggested permanence.
With dark clouds hovering over the ground he was bowled by Looknauth at 71-6 after facing 28 balls for 32, decorated with five fours and a six.
Rain stopped play just before Tea at 103-9 and when played resumed the last wicket pair of Mark Robe (41) and Colin Benn (2 from 34 balls) added 44 in a frustrating stand with Robe looking an accomplished batsman before he was taken at long-on to end the game. Reifer finished with 3-14 and Looknauth 3-45 doing the main damage with the ball.
Meanwhile, at Albion Lower Corentyne resumed on 249-6 reached 290 before bowling out Georgetown for 140 in their second innings despite an attractive 57 from Robin Bacchus. Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Persaud (5-39) captured his third five-wicket haul in two matches to move to 19 wickets in the tournament. Pacer Raun Johnson supported with 2-34 for L/C’tyne who were set 65 to win.
The home side reached 65 for the loss of Devon Clements’s wicket with Jonathon Foo making an undefeated 26 to go to 305 runs, top scoring in the nine-wicket win.
At Cumberland in Canje, West Berbice overnight on 98-2, reached 163 with Avishkar Sewkarran (40) and Shemron Hetmyer (35) leading the way. Ricardo Adams had 5-25 and Anthony Adams 3-29. The visitors, set 216 to win, reached 216-4 with Kevin Boodie (102) joining Jonathon Foo (2) as the only batsmen to score centuries. Boodie got support from Ricardo Adams (49) and Ricardo Peters (29) to give Essequibo a six wicket win. Kevin Jawhair took 2-47 for West Berbice.
The next round begins on Thursday with E’bo facing E/Bank at Everest, W/B’ce playing W/ Dem in Canje, G/T battling E/Coast at Bourda and U/C’tyne taking on L/C’tyne in an all Berbice affair at Port Mourant.
