Following information received from an authority that persons were involved in Human Trafficking, ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Saturday night, conducted raids on two popular business places along Charlotte Street, Georgetown, where 16 persons were taken into custody.
According to the police, 14 of the 16 persons are foreign nationals and have been detained and are assisting with the investigation.
A police source subsequently informed this publication that the investigators were able to ascertain that the 14 individuals are Brazilian nationals.
Investigations are currently ongoing.
This would not the first instance where a trafficking in persons matter – or in this case, a supposed case of TIP – would have made it to the fore. In fact, a few months ago, almost 30 non-nationals were apprehended in Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni). This had resulted from an exercise carried out by the Ministry of Social Protection, a team from the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Unit and the Guyana Women Miners Organisation (GWMO).
It was during that time also, that Guyana exited Tier 2 on the Watchlist for TIP. The new status was revealed in the US State Department Trafficking in Persons Report 2016. Guyana was placed in that category three years ago and has since undertaken numerous initiatives to improve its rating.
The report noted that while Guyana does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking, it is making significant efforts to do so.
