Dear Editor,
It was my firm belief from the inception that two persons will bring disrepute to the new government – Mr. Harmon and Mr. Basil Williams (now joined by Dr. Norton). I do not know these men personally nor have had any interaction with either, but by observing their general attitude in the media over the years, I instinctively felt that they do not have what it takes to be ‘public servants’. They come across as arrogant and impulsive individuals. Mr. Granger needs to wake up and do the ‘Kamla Persaud thing’ before it becomes too late. It is better to lose the next election with integrity rather than be labeled as a ‘lame duck’ president and still lose the election.
Which Minister of Legal Affairs, in their right mind, would interfere with the decision of a duly constituted constitutional body, especially if his power to interfere is open to interpretation? The PPP, with their mountain of faults, nevertheless used to run to Ian Chang for any least thing! This would’ve been the proper avenue if the Minister felt that the JSC had erred in their appointment of the Deputy Registrar.
It is of necessity that I should now be worried about a long awaited decision of the Court of Appeal in the U.G. and Cox’s matter, in which I have a vested interest because from 2003 to present Clairmont Cox, Ras Marcus and I have been battling that institution obtain law results for exams written in 2003, thirteen years ago! Final arguments in the said case were heard on 07 March 2016 and reported in the Chronicle on 08 March 2016 that a reserved decision will be given. A decision in Mr. Cox’s favour will be a serious indictment of Mr. Vincent Alexander.
It is already making its way into the public domain that the independence of the Judiciary is under siege (Peeping Tom, Sunday KNews 21 August 2016). It is for President Granger to speak out firmly against interference of the Judiciary and for the judges and magistrates to bear in mind the boldness of former Justice Keith Messiah in the Teemal case. I am not to be taken as accusing the Honourable Minister of being likely to tamper with the said Court of Appeal decision aforementioned, but with this new found penchant for interference, I am beginning to get the jitters!
