Residents of Linden, especially those who reside on Wismar, have renewed their call for the intervention of the Harbour Master and relevant authorities against errant boat service owners.
This call came in the wake of a passenger boat from Chester Boat Service sinking on the landing last Tuesday evening, shortly after a ship loaded with bauxite left the Bosai wharf.
According to one resident, this is the second time a boat has sank on the landing – the first being one attached to Major’s Boat Service, two months ago, which had the captain and three other people on board. He said the boat owners should ensure that their boats are safe on the water. He also stressed eHe opinedemphasisedthat the Harbour Master and other officials should visit the town.
“People lives are in danger. When we get in de boat all dem want is dem money and de boats ent good. Dem leaking bad bad bad. Dem ent gon do nothing until something bad happen”.
It is alleged that the ferry took passengers from Wismar to McKenzie, and because of the inexperience of the captain, when the ship passed the boat sank just as it moored on the landing. The captain was not available for a comment, as he left when the boat sank.
One taxi driver said it is ‘slackness’ of the boat owners that is responsible.
“Just imagine if it was in de middle of the river; what would have happened? These people don’t care. Life jackets are not even enough in the boats for passengers. De Harbour Master need to come to Linden unexpectedly on these people.”
It was also noted that many of the captains for the boat services are not certified and do not have licences. Adams Boat Service is said to be the only service which has two licenced captains and life jackets on the boats.
