The Attorney General (AG) and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams, has revealed that the Government will be moving – when the National Assembly recovenes – to make recommendations to bring the Former AG Anil Nandlall, before the Committee of Privileges.
Minister Williams earlier this week told Media Operatives that Nandlall had lied in the National Assembly.
Williams accused the former AG for lying to house where he had made utterances that the Former President, Donald Ramotar had met with the wife of Walter Rodney, in the United States, and that she had requested the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into her husband’s death be held without the involvement of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) and the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR).
“Those are lies!” the AG said.
Williams also made reference to the matter involving Ramotar authorizing the payment for law books that were for Nandlall’s personal use.
The AG asserted that the fact that the Auditor General did not take any action, does not prohibit the Government from taking legal action.
The AG also touched on the issue of the Forensic Audits where there have been calls from agencies, public figures and citizens, for action to be taken due to the many irregularities that were highlighted in them.
He made it clear that the Government is “looking at everything” and the claim that the Government is stalling is not true but rather “everything is just a matter of time.”
Earlier this year, Williams had requested that the Legal Affairs Ministry’s Permanent Secretary (PS), Indira Anandjit, be sent on administrative leave to facilitate an audit into the disappearance of millions of dollars worth of law books and computer accessories.
Williams had subsequently disclosed that the missing Commonwealth Law Books are valued at approximately $3M and the computer parts over $2M. Further, the AG had stated that Ramotar had disclosed to the Auditor that there was a “private arrangement” between himself and the former AG.
Nandlall in his response had accused Williams of “blackmail” and attempted to clear the air where he had disclosed that as per condition of his service, the state foots the bill during his tenure as Minister.
Not only is the Administration looking to bring Nandlall to the Privileges Committee but the Opposition also, has plans of its own.
It was made known last month that People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) will be making moves to recommend that the besieged Minister of Health, Dr. George Norton, be brought before the Committee because of contradictory responses/remarks he made in the National Assembly earlier last month.
