Dear Editor,
I am extremely disgruntled about the things that are happening in our country. I will briefly outline my experiences at the New Amsterdam Hospital. A few weeks back, I went to visit an immediate relative who was admitted and later passed away in the said hospital. I approached the front entrance (that can lead to the wards) only to be told by a guard that “you are not allowed to use this entrance”. I looked at her with a perplexed expression on my face before I questioned it. She directed me to another entrance. I then questioned the reason for this. She told me “the CEO made it this way and this entrance is for doctors and nurses only”. I immediately told her therefore they should have a sign above the entrance written “Employees Only”.
In this case anyone can use that entrance since there isn’t any indication to do otherwise. Apart from that, why is it that this entrance is restricted from the public? The fact is, this entrance is at a convenient location that will take you to the wards. Is the hospital owned by the CEO, doctors and nurses? In my opinion, these public hospitals are owned by the people of Guyana and are for the people of Guyana.
After I finished my visitation, I went to the receptionist for a number to have my blood pressure tested. I was told that the nurse who would test pressure is on lunch. It is commonsensical to know that if one nurse is on lunch, another should be there in her place attending to the people.
Are there inadequate nurses at the New Amsterdam Hospital? I purposely did this because I heard about people’s plight too often at the New Amsterdam Hospital. There was no reason for me to test my blood pressure. I now understand why there is always a colossal amount of people at the hospitals waiting for hours before they can be attended to.
Recently, I heard that one man was turned away when he approached the nurses to test his pressure because the nurse assumed he was drunk. He walked away and later fell to the ground; that is when they rushed and picked him up. I don’t know what happened after. I hope the CEO can fix these issues at the New Amsterdam Hospital as early as possible.
The things that are happening in Guyana on a daily basis would make one feel perturbed, irate and sickened. When it is not the hospitals it is the Guyana Post Office or Guyana Water Incorporated or Guyana Power and Light or the banks or the police stations or traffic ranks and plain clothes detectives making random stops and what is more sickening is that all the complaints would fall on deaf ears. I guess this is Guyana-a land of poor services and well known for those characteristics.
