The Director and Deputy Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) will assume duties with
effect from September 19.
The two top anti-corruption officials have since both entered into separate contracts with the Finance Secretary, the Office of the Prime Minister has announced.
This information was provided by Clerk of the National Assembly, Sherlock Isaacs to Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, who had inquired whether effect had been given to a decision of the House to appoint the officials.
At its Sitting before the August 8 recess, the National Assembly had unanimously appointed banking official, Matthew Hugh Edward Langevine, to the post of FIU Director and Abiose Thomas as Deputy Director. Thomas has worked years in the telecoms sector.
Recommendations for the appointment were made by an Appointments Committee of the National Assembly.
The FIU is a specialised body that was created under the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Act which was made into law by the new Coalition Government. The unit has been under existence for a number of years now, but lacked the clout to go after money launderers and others involved in illicit activities
and would have accumulated their millions.
New anti-money laws have placed more powers in FIU to go after law breakers who are using the banks and other financial institutions to “wash” their money.
