Cyclists in Berbice will today hit the road when the Flying Ace Cycling Club (FACC) in Berbice in collaboration with overseas based Guyanese Franco Crawford stage a 35 miles event along the Corentyne Coast.
The event is expected to pedal off from in front of the No51 Police Station on the Upper Corentyne and proceed to Main and Alexander Street in New Amsterdam for the finish, starting from 09:00 hrs.
The race is for cyclists in Berbice and will see all the riders receiving incentives.
There will be a number of prizes for the top finishers and outstanding riders during the journey.
Prizes will be presented to the first six cyclists to cross the finish line. Rewards will also be presented to the first three juveniles and the first three veterans. There will also be 10 sprint point prizes up for grabs.
The outstanding performers will be presented with cycling gear including clothing and other necessities. Only the winners will receive a monetary award.
Crawford had churned out a name for himself in Guyana as a top cyclist, riding as a member of the FACC before migrating to England where he continues to play his trade in the European and North American Circuits. Crawford is once again becoming a house hold name not mainly for his sporting exploits, but for his selfless and benevolent appetite to assist others.
Crawford, who returns to Guyana on a regular basis, is once again back home on holiday and has been assisting his countrymen with gifts and other donations in a number of areas so that they can have an opportunity to improve their skills and better themselves in whatever they do.
Crawford stated that he is motivated to assist his fellow Guyanese because he feels happy to be able to return to Guyana and give back to his home country and community. He remembered his early upbringing when he hadn’t a proper bike and gear to participate. He continues to be impressed by the talent that is available in Guyana.
Crawford handed over the gear during the week to coordinator of the event and club coach Randolph Roberts.
Crawford is expected to participate in the race and is expected to match pedals with his local counterparts.
Crawford, who is now a community activist and is also spreading the word of GOD, does not only assist cycling, but gives to other sports and community activities as well.
Roberts in expressing appreciation thanked Crawford for always remembering the club. He used the opportunity to call on other past members, overseas based Guyanese and businessman and more so the Government to take a page out of Crawford’s book and come forward and assist the youths so that they could be kept away from the ills of the society and illicit activities.
