Diminutive Shaquincy Wright will lead the charge of defending champions Essequibo Gym when the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association stages this year’s second edition of the Pepsi/Michael Parris National Under-16 competition tomorrow at the National Gymnasium.
In an attempt to help his gym retain the Champion Gym title, Wright is scheduled to slip into Georgetown early tomorrow morning backed up by a talented team of nine other fighters. The 13-year-old orthodox fighter recently won a gold medal at the Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors tournament in April and was adjudged best boxer.
He is said to be in the pink of condition and ready to take the Capital by storm.
When contacted, coach of the reigning champion gym, Clifton Moore, declared Wright battle ready and focused. According to Moore, the talented teen has been dropping opponents in the gym and will invade the Garden City with an intention of continuing the trend.
“We are confident of retaining the Champion Gym title and with Shaquincy in such good form it puts us on a smoother road,” Moore, a highly disciplined coach said yesterday. Team Essequibo includes Christopher Moore and Akeel Mounter both gold medalist at the April tournament, Deron Williams and Junior Hyman among others.
The competition is being sponsored by DDL and will see teams from across Guyana participating. It commences at 1:00pm.
