Royals score come-from-behind 61-57 win against Raiders to capture 3rd Rock title
Down by 13 points heading into the final quarter, Victory Valley Royals romped past Retrieve Raiders 61-57 to cart off honours and bragging rights in the 3rd Rock Entertainment ‘King of the Ring’ – GT Beer Open basketball championship last Saturday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court.
Led by their forwards Trevor Profitt and Orlando Glasgow the Royals initially were up 13-9 when the first quarter ended but the Raiders, ranked number one in Linden, bounced back to take control when the first half elapsed 33-24 following an impressive 14-11 run.
The Raiders then maximized that advantage making it 47-34 when the pivotal third quarter closed out after another good 14-10 run.
But the Royals upturned that progression as Profitt, who was scoreless in the first two periods burst thorough with 14 points in the second half as Glasgow netted 10, paving the way for an eventual winning score 61-57 as Glasgow top scored with 15 and Profitt 14 for the Royals.
The Raiders had their hopes hinged on Neil Marks who shot in 17 game high points, and National guard Keon ‘Buktor’ Cameron who scored 16, while Omally Sampson supported as usual with 10 points.
Among those who witnessed the final was president of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation Nigel Hinds.
The Royals, seeded third in Linden walked away with $100,000 and a trophy, while the number one rated Raiders settled for $75,000 and a trophy.
The third place game between Kwakwani and defending champions Half Mile Bulls did not come off with the Bulls getting third place and a trophy, due to the non-appearance of Kwakwani.
