Permaul, Johnson & Foo leave L/C’tyne in driver’s seat
By Sean Devers
Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul (5-23), pacer Raun Johnson (4-30) and Jonathon Foo’s unbeaten 106 put Lower Corentyne in the driver’s seat against Essequibo in their first round encounter in the GCB Jaguars three-day League at Tuschen ground on East Bank Essequibo yesterday.
The 27-year-old Permaul and pacer Raun Johnson combined to send Essequibo, whose last five wickets tumbled for 12 runs, crashing to 101 all out in 34.1 overs on good track with nice carry and some turn for the spinners.
Anthony Adams (33) and Parmesh Parsatom (24) added 58 for the sixth wicket for Essequibo.
Foo, who turns 26 on September 11, smashed a blistering unbeaten 106 from 68 balls from 110 minutes with10 fours and seven sixes and shared in an unfinished third wicket stand with First Class left-hander Gajanand Singh (25) to see L/Corentyne to 173-2 when bad light stopped play at 17:53hrs.
The western boundary was pulled in due to a soggy outfield because of overnight rain and Essequibo elected to bat after the entire first session was lost.
Johnson bowled Royan Fredericks (2), while Niel Smith trapped Kevin Boodie (12) LBW after he had taken consecutive boundaries off Johnson.
Johnson, who bowled with good pace, then removed Ricardo Peters (10) as Essequibo slipped to 26-3 before Permaul got rid of Ricardo Adam (4) and Avinash Persaud (0) as two wickets tumbled at 31.
Parsatom reached the ropes three times in his 89 minute innings to stage a recovery and put together a solid partnership with Anthony Adams, who deposited Sharaz Ramcharran for a couple of sixes off successive balls in a 65-minutes knock.
When Parsatom was bowled by an arm-ball from Permaul at 89-6 it started a rapid procession to and from the only stand which also doubled as a player’s pavilion.
When Looknauth Chinkoo (1) was bowled by Johnson on the stroke of Tea, the visitors had dismissed Essequibo in their own back yard in just one session.
Kandasammy Surujnarine and Devon Clements carried Lower Corentyne to 26 on a nice lush outfield before a good sized working day crowd saw Clements (13) taken at mid-on as Anthony Adams made the break through after Ronsford Beaton had tested the openers with some lively pace.
Akenie Adams removed Surujnarine (23) to lift the hopes of a home team fight back but that was not to be as Foo and Singh joined forces to orchestrate ‘operation rebuild’ with an array of brutal shots.
Foo followed up his excellent form in GCB 50 overs League and got going with a delightful cover drive off Anthony Adams for four before dumping him out of the ground.
Foo clipped Beaton off his hip to reach his 50 from 37 balls and 63 minutes decorated with four fours and three sixes and the pugnacious right-hander was on fire. But Singh was not to be left out and hit Anthony Adams back over his head and onto the East Bank Essequibo Public Road.
Foo played a one-handed hook for four when Beaton bowled short and hurried him for pace but when he pitched up the next ball, drove him brutally down the ground for four before pulling him for a third successive boundary in the over.
Foo swept Anthony Adams for his seventh six to bring up his second 50 from just 20 balls. His ton lasted 93 minutes and also included 10 fours.
Today’s play is scheduled to commence at 09:00hrs to make up from time lost yesterday.
