-12 Finals set including International 200m and 4x100m races
The 2016 Boyce and Jefford Track and Field Classic will get underway today in Linden with the arrival of the international athletes promising to make the event a memorable one at Mackenzie’s Sports Club Ground from 1:00pm.
At a press conference that was held yesterday at Regency Suites, Chairman of the Boyce/Jefford Classic Committee, Colin Boyce highlighted that all the necessary systems are in place for the event that starts today and continues tomorrow.
“Boyce and Jefford would have been evolving to what we are deeming a mini-Olympics; we are happy to have the Trinidadians here and the Jamaicans are back as well,” Boyce said, welcoming both contingents that were present at the forum.
“I also must commend the ground staff for the shape of the ground and it can now be compared to probably Eve Leary or Providence, it is fully grassed and even if there is a bit of rain, it will not be as water logged as before,” Boyce mentioned.
Meanwhile, main sponsor, Digicel represented by Communications Manager, Vidya Sanichara highlighted the telecommunications giant’s commitment to sport and the Classic.
“We will continue to back youth development and as you know we recently signed Usain Bolt as our Speed Ambassador and we hope that from this meet we can have more talent coming out and our own Guyanese Speed Ambassador,” Sanichara stated.
Smalta Brand Representative, Anjelica Rodney noted that ANSA McAL is also pleased to be a part of the event for its seventh edition.
“We are delighted to be onboard and we are committed to improving sports and we are always looking for avenues to push that, education is important but also sport as well,” Rodney noted in her brief remarks.
Apart from Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica, Grenadian Kenisha Pascal arrived in Guyana yesterday afternoon while defending Men’s International 800m Champion, Kevin Bayley arrived from the United States earlier last week.
Olympian Winston George is also here to compete along with US-based Alita Moore and Linden’s Cassey George.
Those, among a host of other local athletes will be spearheading the Guyanese charge among the international participants.
Today will feature several Finals: Long Jump Men and Women, 200m Men and Women, Discus Men and Women, 3000m Women and 5000m Men, 2400m Distance Medley Relay Race for Women, 3000m Distance Medley Relay Race for Men with the 4x100m Finals for Women and Men bringing down the Curtains on Day One.
The Preliminaries for all the other events will also be held. The event continues tomorrow from 1:00pm with the Opening Ceremony before all other Finals. Five Clubs will be vying for the top $1 million prize, while $100,000 is up for grabs in eight international events. The total prize money that is up for grabs this weekend is some $3 million.
