We must keep trying despite the odds

Dear Editor,

This letter addresses all the students who wrote this year’s CSEC examinations not only those who did exceptionally well but also those who may not have gotten their desired results; so I wish to congratulate this year’s candidates. While my article is one of congratulation, reassurance and encouragement, I must at the same time frankly state that you get what you work for. As harsh as it may seem this is the reality but, by the same token I do acknowledge that everyone’s circumstances may be different.
With that being said I wish to offer a bit of reassurance more so for those candidates who may not have done so well. Inserting a bit of my own personal experience, I graduated in November 2011 and although I did fairly well, I may not have acquired the results I desired. Reflecting on those years I would say that I was a bit disappointed in myself and I may have been apprehensive in sharing my results with my family. I remember I was so nervous that I asked a school mate to view my results online. I was also unable to gain access to the site due to the fact that the servers were packed. Although I have had other academic struggles here and there for instance at Sixth Form, I resolved to put all that behind me, while it still serves as a reminder. I must say it fueled where I am presently as a third year student at the University of Guyana.
Although it has not been an easy journey, I can nevertheless say I am momentarily pleased with where I am personally; and I say momentarily, because I am cognizant of the fact that there is still room for improvement. Moreover in my opinion CSEC more specifically “bad” CSEC results are not the end of the world, equally I’m in no way saying that sub-par results are acceptable, nonetheless I urge you not to get too discouraged. What you decide to do next be it with those results are therefore up to you, indeed I don’t have a Steve Jobs (insert Guyanese version) academic story however all that I have said is the unadorned truth.
Finally, in taking the next steps whatever they may be, I encourage you to work harder, whether at another academic institution, a family life or even a regular job because it’s only going to get tougher from here on out, as clichéd as it may sound CSEC examinations are not the final lap, but merely the beginning. Once more I’d like to express that I am in no way attempting to downplay the fact that you may not have done so well, but I urge you not to be too anxious. While it may perhaps be a bit embarrassing and yes, your parents may be disappointed or even upset, I recommend you share your results as this is simply a passage from one step to another; if at first we don’t succeed we must try and try again for only with dedication and hard work will you persevere
