Rose Hall Town Jammers basketball Club made a bright start to the A. Ally’s and Sons
First Division Basketball Competition with an easy 49-31 win over newcomers Guyana Human Development Centre (GHDC) when play continued with one game on Sunday at the GHDC Hard-court, Tain Corentyne, Berbice.
Top scoring for Rose Hall Jammers were Joel Glasgow with 16 points, while support came from Calvin Bates 12 and Jonathan Parshotam with nine.
For the GHDC it was an unsuccessful start to their campaign at the first division level as they were outhustled despite putting up a good fight. David Gomes led the way for the host with 12 points followed by Davindra Khedna with 10 and Royston Sahadeo who scored 6.
Six teams, which divided into two groups, are participating in the competition with group “A” comprising of Smithfield Rockers, Fyrish Black Sharks and Ithaca Hardliners of West Berbice.
The teams making up group B are Rose Hall Town Jammers, Guyana Human Development Centre of Corentyne and New Amsterdam Warriors.
The teams in each group will play each other once with the top two advancing to play the top two in the other group. The winners will advance to the semifinals.
Matches in the tournament are being held every Sunday.
Cash, trophies and other incentives will be presented to the top three teams with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and other outstanding individual performers also being rewarded.
The competition is expected to continue on Sunday with Ithaca Hardliners taking on Smythfield Rockers from 16:00hrs on the Ithaca Basketball Court. (Samuel Whyte)
