– as residents come to aid of Sarah Johanna grocer
A 21-year-old ex-con was shot dead Saturday night and his accomplice was beaten when they were confronted by angry residents, hours after they managed to escape from police ranks at Sarah Johanna, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The two suspects were caught later that night and attacked by public spirited persons at Pearl, EBD.
The dead bandit has been identified as Seon Clarke called “Cash Money” of Old Road Land of Canaan, EBD.
Police in a release said that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Clarke and the alleged beating of his accomplice around 22:30 hrs on Saturday by a group of public spirited citizens from the community of Pearl.
Investigations so far have revealed that about 14:00h on Saturday, Clarke and an accomplice went into a grocery store at Sarah Johanna and were behaving suspiciously.
The proprietor observed their behaviour and made his way to the public road and alerted a passing policeman.
The police summoned other ranks, but the two suspects spotted the lawmen and fled into the bushes nearby.
“During the process, two loud explosions were heard. A search was conducted but they (the suspects) were not found,” the police said.
However, around 22:30hrs, members of the community spotted the men on the Pearl Public Road and apprehended them during which it was alleged that one of the public spirited citizens shot Clarke, while others inflicted a beating on his accomplice.
The men were handed over to the police, who rushed them to the Diamond Public Hospital, where Clarke was pronounced dead on arrival.
His accomplice was treated before being taken into police custody.
Meanwhile, at the scene, one eyewitness said that “a blue car drive up and two ah dem jump out and one run through the dam and jump the fence behind the shop, while the other went into a grocery store at Johanna.”
The eyewitness added that “the owner see dem and run out hollering fuh help and when people start come out the car driver (of the suspects’ car) drive away and left dem. They run down the dam and hide in the bushes.”
Later that night, another eyewitness said that, “residents spotted dem on the Pearl Public Road. I see dem crawling in the bush like real, real soldiers and them been ducking when lights come close and one of the villagers fire a shot and if you hear how the bandit holla.”
When this newspaper approached Clarke’s father yesterday, the man had no idea that his son had died.
Godfrey Clarke said that he heard of an attempted robbery at Sarah Johanna but was unaware that his son was involved.
Mr. Clarke made no attempt to hide his son’s history with the law but claimed that he tried his best to help his son mend his ways.
“The last time I saw my son was when he disappeared from my home two weeks ago and this is because I tried to talk to him about the way he was living,” Mr. Clarke said.
He revealed that his son was only released from prison about three weeks ago for stealing a phone from a relative. The 21-year-old was on remand for four months and the case was subsequently dismissed.
“He wasn’t living by me. In fact, I banned him from my home. I told him to go to church. When he come out of prison, I asked him about his intention and I told him that he can’t be all over the place and he told me that he got a mason work,” Mr. Clarke said.
Over the past few days, residents have been taking the fight to criminals, with the criminals getting the worst of the exchanges.
Last Friday, a thief who snatched a chain from a man at Bourda Market got a severely thrashing before he was handed over to the police.
And, last Wednesday, two armed bandits were attacked and beaten when they broke into the home of a North Ruimveldt man and demanded cash and jewellery.
The residents of that community responded when the victim called out for help and did not spare the two bandits.
While one of the men was discharged and is in police custody, the second suspect is brain dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
On August, 09 last, 21-year-old Levi Alleyne was beaten by residents of Enterprise, East Coast Demerara (ECD) when he grabbed a phone from someone in the village. He succumbed to his injuries the following day.
