Mayor’s Cup quarterfinals to be played Sunday at GFC

After a delay for the weather and other circumstances at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground will be the venue for the quarterfinals of the Mayor’s Cup football championship as teams contest in earnest for the Mayor’s Cup and Aruwai first prize.
Kicking off from 4:30pm Santos take on Police in the first quarterfinal, while coming up at 6:30pm Western Tigers challenge Eagles of Linden in the second match, while in the last quarterfinal of the day at 8:30pm Riddim Squad tackle Federal Winners Connection also of Linden.
Following Sunday’s competition, three nights of the tournament remain to determine the winner.
The semis are set for Wednesday August 31 and final and third place fixed for September 11.
To date Gavin Graham of Den Amstel with 3 is the leading goalscorer, while Fabian Crawford (Santos), Randolph Wagner (Western Tigers), Dwayne McLennan (Western Tigers), Nikosi Denny (Ann’s Grove) and Keron Boston (Police) all have two.
At stake in the championship is the top prize of $700,000 and a trophy donated by Aruwai Resort. The second place team pockets $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy, while the third place team carts off $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy. The fourth place finishers will receive $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy.
Ricks and Sari has also donated hampers which will go to the winning team, while tournament’s top goal scorer will get a three piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store.
Top Brandz of Broad and High Streets, distributors of Interstate vehicle batteries, is among the key sponsors on board assisting the tournament.
Aruwai Resort of the Essequibo River is also another main supporter of this year’s event and Coordinator Lennox Arthur has expressed thanks to all the sponsors.
Apart from Aruwai Resort and Top Brandz, others on board include: Ansa McAl, Minister of State Joe Harmon and his ministry, John Fernandes, Ricks and Sari and AH&L Kissoon.
