With the East Bank Demerara thoroughfare currently being expanded to accommodate additional lanes among other upgrades, commuters and drivers have registered their disappointment with the ‘poor’ traffic management
measures that are in place at nights.
One driver expressed his concern saying that there are no adequate demarcations in place to caution drivers in advance of the sudden rises, merges and diversions along the roadways.
He added that now the construction is in its final stages of completion, the diversions are becoming more frequent and it is difficult for drivers to pinpoint the alternative routes, especially at nights, when there is less lighting and no ‘proper’ indications.
Persons have also been calling in to Kaieteur News saying that there are not enough notices to forewarn drivers of the sudden rises and ‘drops’ along the roadways. Many have indicated that the contractors are working and upon completing their day’s work will ‘just roll barrels to barricade the unfinished section and that’s it’.
Also, there have been reports that drivers are stopping and removing barricades to gain access to uncompleted roadways. Vehicles are also seen driving over curbs to gain access to sidewalks endangering the lives of passengers and pedestrians.
Meanwhile, vehicles are also seen encroaching on the one-way roadway resulting in oncoming vehicles dashing to avoid collision.
A Police spokesperson, when contacted, recently stated that the onus was on the contractors to have systems in place to manage traffic. However, the Police have been working with the contractors to have better systems in place, while operators as well as pedestrians should utilise the roadways in a careful manner so as to avoid mishaps.
“It’s common sense, if you see a barricade why would you want to remove it? It was placed there for a reason…To avoid you from driving on terrain that is still under construction that can harm your vehicle and passengers,”
The lawman also called on persons witnessing these events, to report it to the police so that action can be taken.
Earlier this month, Kaieteur News had carried a picture on its front page showing vehicles disregarding the traffic rules by driving along the sidewalks. The errant drivers were charged and placed before the courts.
The expansion works are slated to be completed by the end of this month.
