The annual Massy 10km Road Race and Fitness Walk will be held on September 4
with Massy’s Chairman of Conglomerate, Deo Persaud, handing over the sponsorship cheque to Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) President, Aubrey Hutson on Friday.
Hutson informed that the race is in its seventh year. “The great support for this annual event cannot be understated, I thank them for this opportunity,” he said.
“Massy in its usual kindness will be giving out prizes and awards to all of the athletes who do exceptionally well, we’re still in discussions to even give something a little extra to other athletes who participate. We know all the athletes have been training and are going to have a great race come September,” Hutson continued.
Persaud highlighted how grateful Massy is to be a stakeholder in the event, since the company sees it as an important way of giving back to the Guyanese community.
“This is a happy occasion for us. Because if people are healthy and well then they could serve themselves, their family and their country better. We see this as an important part of our community activity in Guyana,” Persaud said.
Both Hutson and Persaud reminded that the event is open to the general public, and registration to take part remains free.
Defending champion, Cleveland Forde was present at the forum. He spoke to the media.
“I know that when I go out there I will expect the other competitors to be as good as you are or even better, but you always have to run smart,” Forde said.
The event will begin at 6:00am from Vreed-en-Hoop on the West Bank to the Massy Headquarters, which includes a run across the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
Hutson stated that the run over the bridge is one of the challenges of the race.
“There’s one part of this race that separates the boys from the men, that’s the Harbour Bridge. Moving the race from one region to another, the Demerara Harbour Bridge continues to pose a great challenge to the athletes, ensuring that this event is not just a regular flat race,” Hutson observed.
