A man who had been behaving in a disorderly manner outside the Camp Street prison, was shot dead around 23:50 hrs on Friday by a Guyana Police Force (GPF) constable, who is stationed at Tactical Service Unit (TSU).
Up to press time, the man had not been identified.
The deceased, who is of mixed race, fair in complexion – about 5’9″ in height, thin build and suspected to be in his late twenties to early thirties was shot to the lower abdomen. He died while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The shooting took place on Camp and Durban Streets.
The police in a press release said that investigations so far have revealed that earlier in the night, the man went to the Camp Street Prison, on John and Durban Streets, and behaved in a disorderly manner. He reportedly threw down some steel barriers, in the presence of the ranks, guarding the perimeter of the prison.
He was taken into custody by ranks of a police patrol but subsequently returned and continued the said behaviour and action, in front of the Prison.
According to the release, a TSU rank armed with a service weapon and under the supervision of a subordinate officer approached the suspect. The suspect then reportedly attacked the rank, to which he (rank) discharged a round—hitting the suspect to the abdomen.
The man was immediately rushed to the GPHC where he eventually succumbed.
A source close to the investigation said that the rank’s weapon has been lodged as the probe continues.
