Scheneza Lewis, the 23-year-old British citizen whose mother perished in a tragic accident last Wednesday on the Chelsea Public Road, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD), has no idea that the woman has succumbed.
Lewis is nursing injuries to her jaw, ribs and neck at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
In an interview, her father, Daniel Lewis said that no one has told his daughter that her mother, Bibi Haroon O’ Donovan died in the accident, because “she is already in a lot of pain”.
Although she is frequently asking for the 58-year-old woman, relatives have managed to keep O’ Donovan’s death a secret.
“She is not talking, but she is showing signs,” the father said.
O’Donovan and her daughter migrated to England more than 20 years ago. At the time of the accident, they were returning to their home, having spent three weeks in Guyana.
According to information received, the overseas-based Guyanese were passengers in motor car HC 6753 which was proceeding west along the Chelsea Public Road, at a fast rate, when the driver lost control and crashed into the rear of a stationary lorry, on the opposite side of the road.
Haroon Eshack, the taxi driver was subsequently charged for causing death of O’Donovan.
Meanwhile, Lewis said that his ex-partner owned a house in Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice and whenever she visited, she would stay there with her daughter and relatives would visit.
Lewis said that he visited his daughter the night before the accident and they had a hearty chat.
“She told me that she planning to get married in Italy and she want me to go. She said that she would be coming back in December to fix my papers,” he recalled.
According to the older Lewis, his daughter and O’Donovan were heading to the airport in a taxi when the accident happened.
“A friend with a lorry came and picked me up and brought me to the scene at Mahaica Bridge. I was told that the car slammed into the back of the truck and my daughter’s mother lost her life and she was injured,” Lewis said.
When Scheneza Lewis recovers, she will be heading back to England.
