Multiple boxing champion and world rater, Clive Atwell is recuperating well at the
Kingsbrook Hospital, New York, where he had gone to perform corrective surgery for an injury incurred in his last title fight here in Guyana. Atwell was rushed to the Balwant Singh hospital where Dr Amernauth Dookie had performed corrective surgery following an injury incurred in his bout against Dexter Gonsalves.
Founder and CEO of the Guyana American Heritage Foundation, Lady Ira Lewis, has been a key person in Atwell’s team to have his surgery performed in a timely manner and said that his decision to travel to the USA for the surgery was done in the nick of time since further delay could have been catastrophic. “Clive did a cat scan on Friday and was immediately placed in the critical care unit,” informed Lady Ira. She said that the prognosis was not good as the doctors performed an MRI and detected 2 slipped discs in Atwell’s lower back. “The doctors said that this injury was responsible for Atwell’s demise in the (aforementioned) bout with Gonsalves,” Lady Ira further said. She said that the neurosurgeons in New York had shown some concern over certain lapses in Atwell’s condition which should have been corrected during his initial surgery.
Notwithstanding, Lady Ira said that the popular idiom ‘all’s well that ends well’ is applicable to Atwell’s situation. “To my knowledge, this is the final surgery but Atwell will have to undergo a recovery period that entails rigorous therapy, she said. She said that she is unable to quote the cost of the procedure since this can only be ascertained when he is finally discharged from the hospital.
Meanwhile, Lady Ira said that a large team of concerned individuals had dedicated their time and other resources to ensure that Atwell’s surgery was a success. Apart from the local crew mentioned earlier in another report several members of the USA Diaspora should also be commended for their unselfish input which included housing and other needs. Those individuals are Mitchell Melville, who had assisted with accommodation, Dr James Cort of the Guyana Medical Mission, Bibi Alli (Fight for your dreams without fear) and Monica Sanchez, CEO Miss Caricom pageant.
Following his initial surgery, Atwell suffered a recurrence and was advised by medical experts that he would have had to undergo further surgical intervention. Several Guyanese, both at home and out of the (USA) Diaspora had unselfishly supported Atwell’s bid and he finally underwent that surgery at the Kingsbrook Hospital, New York some 3 days ago.
