Another overseas-based organisation has come forward to assist students who have performed exceptionally well at the recently held National Grade Six Assessment.
At a simple but significant ceremony held recently at the GuySuCo Rose Hall Estate Training Building, 19 students from six primary schools in the East Canje area were rewarded for their outstanding performances in the Examination.
Total cash of US$2,500 was provided as incentives by the East Canje Organisation of New York (ECONY) to the students. The organisation which is made up of former residents of the East Canje area will annually recognize the top three performers of six primary schools in the area, among other initiatives. With two students tying for third place this year at one of the schools, the number was increased to 19.
Anil Beharry, local representative of the organisation, chaired the programme and read a prepared statement – “Congratulations to you the students, parents and teachers for your success and we pledge to continue this programme. We are currently in the process of securing wheelchairs for the needy as one of our many ways of giving back to the East Canje area. You have done us proud and we will continue to raise funds in the USA to assist those back home. Only recently we hosted the largest annual Canje Day, a popular event where not only persons from the East Canje area attended but the entire Berbice in the USA.”
Speaking at the ceremony Regional Chairman, Region Six, David Armogan thanked the Organisation for the wonderful initiative and encouraged the kids to make good use of the funds. He reminded them that this was just the foundation, and they need to stay focused and do well in the rest of their academic career, and life in general.
Armogan also congratulated the parents and teachers for the role they played in the success of the young standouts.
Beharry thanked the management and staff of the estate for the use of the venue and the East Canje Organisation for making the venture possible.
The vote of thanks was done by top student Raheem Blair.
