Earlier, the prosecutor in her opening address told the court that the couple had lived together for a number of years before the incident. The union had borne three children.
On the day in question the couple got into a misunderstanding following a third party relationship (triangular love affair).
During the quarrel, Tarchand killed Bhisundial and attempted to take his own life but because of medical intervention he was saved. The woman’s lifeless body was discovered on a floor in the house while Tarchand was found nearby clad in a pair of pants and was shirtless.
Both were picked up and rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital where Bhisundyal was pronounced dead.
Tarchand was rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital, before being taken to the Albion Police Station. He was subsequently taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he remained overnight. He was later taken to the Central Police Station and charged.
Prosecution star witness Browan Luke called “Brian” was the first to take the witness stand. During his evidence he admitted to having an intimate relationship with the now dead woman. They would both visit each other’s home.
Luke spent a lengthy time on the witness stand being grilled by defence counsel Bacchus.
He also told the court that he was one of the first persons to visit the scene and had informed the sister of the deceased of what had taken place. He and the sister had visited and made a report to the Albion Police Station.
Also taking the witness stand was Constable Edmond Barlow. He testified to the part he played during the investigations. He was also cross examined extensively by Bacchus.
The post mortem examination conducted on the body gave the cause of death as manual strangulation.
During the first trial earlier in the year the matter was aborted by Justice Franklyn Holder after certain complaints were made.
