The names of at least five persons are being considered for nomination to a Committee to investigate allegations made against Director of Nursing Services (Matron) of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Sister Collene Hicks.
A senior official of the hospital made this disclosure yesterday.
According to the official, the hospital’s Board of Directors recently met and, among other things, deliberated over the nomination of the five individuals named. It is expected that the members will be selected shortly and the process of investigation will follow soon after.
The investigation process, the official said, could span a period of one month but even before that, the Board is expected to make an official announcement of who the Committee members are, so as to show the public that those selected will operate without prejudice.
Chairman of the hospital’s Board of Directors, Dr. Carl ‘Max’ Hanoman last month revealed that Hicks was sent on administration leave to facilitate the investigation.
The recommendation for Hicks to be sent off on administrative leave was forthcoming at a Board meeting in early July. At that meeting, the Chairman said, a number of issues were up for discussion, including a petition signed by 150 clinical staffers requesting that the service of the Director of Nursing be terminated.
The petition was premised on allegations by staffers that Hicks was not a team player, since she was not open for nurses to be exposed to specialised training in order to help improve the delivery of health services at the institution. There are reports, too, that she had been limiting the number of nurses in certain departments because of her unwillingness to work with some doctors. There are allegations too, that she was insubordinate to the Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Alan Johnson.
Dr. Hanoman had disclosed even then that the hospital will be tasked with finding an independent body or people who are neutral, to conduct the investigation.
Taking on the role of the Director of Nursing Services are two senior nursing personnel – Acting Assistant Director of Nursing (with responsibility for Administration) Sister Celeste Gordon, and Acting Assistant Director of Nursing (with responsibility for Training) Brother Keith Alonzo.
According to the official, with the two senior personnel at the helm of the hospital’s nursing system “there is no friction…everything is normal and we hope to eventually move forward as a team.”
“I feel that when the investigation finishes and everything is settled, we will be in a better position to work together to improve health care. In the long run, if we don’t work towards improving this facility it is our patients who will suffer and we cannot allow that,” the official asserted.
Without highlighting any specific situation, the official made it clear that it is important that the GPHC should be subjected to management that is free of political interference.
“Once there is interference it will be to the detriment of any institution,” the official stressed.
