The Port Mourant Jaguars stalked their opponents before going in for the kill to take top spot in the Corriverton Jets Volleyball competition organised by the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) and held on Sunday last at the Skeldon Line Path ground.
In the final the Jaguars had a tough time before settling down to roll over the Rollers Volleyball Club of New Amsterdam 21-18.
In all a total of 16 teams participated in the day’s competition which ended at twilight. There were three different categories with play in the male senior, women and junior males.
The male teams were Port Mourant Jaguars, Port Mourant Training School 1, GTCPM 1, GTCMP 2 Rollers Volleyball club, Corriverton Jets and No 52 Survivals.
Four teams participated in the female category with teams from the Corentyne River areas making sure that their lengthy travel to the coast for the competition was not in vain as they dominated proceedings. In the final Siparuta adjusted well to defeated neighbours and arch rivals Orealla 15-11, 15-11 for a 2-0 win.
The other female teams that participated were Port Mourant female and Corriverton Jets.
The junior male category saw Orealla Youths defeating No52 Survivors of The Corentyne 21-19 in the final to take top honours in the five team competition. The others that took part in that segment were Tain Humanitarian GTCPM and Corriverton Jets.
The outstanding individual players were also recognised among them were- The senior male category which saw Surendra Motipersaud of Port Mourant Jaguars being voted the MVP.
The female category saw a number of players being recognized for their performances, including Candacy Mentore, Carmen Vadenburg, Sherryanne Felix, Sheliza Edwards and Rhonda Felix.
Among the junior males were – Samuel Jordan, Levi Nedd Jr, Torrand Chandradatt and Sherwin Felix.
A number of sponsors were also recognized for supporting the event including Tropical Auto Sales, Mahen Trading, Vishal & Daughters Gas Station, Ronald Singh Sawmill, Jerry’s Store, Shafella Sawmill, V.P. Baichan, Deckers, Gamandy’s Hard Ware Store, Shanta’s Store and Avinash Gas Station #70 village.
