Digicel is main sponsor of Boyce and Jefford Classic VII – Record number of athletes registered to compete

Telecommunications giant, Digicel, yesterday announced that it is the main sponsor of the Boyce and Jefford Track and Field Classic VII at which a record number of 178 athletes are registered to compete on August 27-28 at the MSC Ground, Linden.
Digicel’s Events and Sponsorship Executive, Lounna Abrams commended the organisers for making the event a continued success, and providing an avenue for sports and youth to be developed. Digicel has been the main sponsor of the event since 2010.
“We would like to thank the organisers for once again having Digicel on board to sponsor this event, which is central to our company’s mandate of youth and community development and we try to do that through sport,” Abrams said.
“We’ve done a lot of work in the community of Linden, and we will continue to give our support to this competition and to Linden. We are pleased to be the sole telecommunications sponsor of the Boyce and Jefford Track and Field Classic,” she added.
Chairman of the Boyce and Jefford Committee, Colin Boyce thanked Digicel for their continued support, and for believing in the event from the start. Boyce also took the opportunity to update the media on preparations for the seventh edition of Guyana’s most lucrative athletics Championships.
He said that a record number of 178 athletes are scheduled to take part in the international event, which also includes the participation of four countries from the Caribbean and the United States of America.
Locally, five clubs are registered to compete for the $1 Million first place prize. Those clubs are The Guyana Defence Force (GDF), The Police Progressive Youth Club, Super Upcoming Runners, Mercury Fast Laners, and Linden Combined Team.
Olympian, Winston George, who recently represented Guyana in the men’s 400m in Rio, Brazil, is expected to be on show. Also present at the ceremony held at the company’s Headquarters in Barrack Street, Kingston was Digicel’s Communications Manager, Vidya Sanchara and Boyce & Jefford Co-Chairman, Edison Jefford.
Approximately $3 Million in cash will be up for grabs, which includes the prize money for the top four clubs, eight individual international events, the male and female media races and the Masters’ 60 metre dash and ‘Champion Athletes’ prize.
