Guyana’s Andrea Alicia Smith despite a back injury, powered her way to the bronze medal in the Women’s 63kg Open category at the 14th Annual IPF/NAPF North American Regional Powerlifting Championships and the 9th IPF/NAPF Caribbean Regional Championships currently underway at the Renaissance Hotel Carambola Beach Resort in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands.
Smith was third best to the Puerto Rico duo of Mariselys Chaparro and Genesse Caldero who won the gold and silver medals respectively.
The leading Guyanese power lifter returned a total of 335.0kg to land the bronze medal with Chaparro’s 420.0kg earning her the gold and Caldero’s 407.5kg giving her the silver.
Smith’s intention was to also challenge for the championship records in the three lifts but this was not possible due to the back injury; however she still did her country and self proud by taking the bronze.
Her best squat was 135kg; bench press 67.5kg with a best deadlift of 132.5 for a total of 335kg.
Guyana’s two other competitors at the championships, Erwyn Smith and Karel Mars will both be in action today in the Men’s 93kg and 105kg Open Divisions respectively.
Smith will come up against Puerto Rico’s Nelson Viera and Trinidad and Tobago’s Anthony Keith and Marlon Belfon.
Mars will come against long time rival from Trinidad and Tobago, Adrian Brown and his countryman, Rondel Hunte. (Franklin Wilson)
