Magistrate Fabayo Azore refused to expunge certain parts of a statement given by a prosecution witness, as requested by attorney Nigel Hughes, who is representing former Police Sergeant Colin Bailey in the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the murder of Sirmattie Ramnaress.
Bailey, 52, Ramnaress’ former reputed husband, of 63 South Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara and Colin Grant of 1161 Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, are currently on remand for the woman’s murder. It is alleged that between August 30 and 31, 2013, at Diamond, they killed 36-year-old Ramnaress.
When the PI continued yesterday, in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, Magistrate Azore informed Police Prosecutor, Stephen Telford and the defence of her ruling to not cut out certain parts of the witness’ statement. The Magistrate said that the evidence led in the statement is relevant to the case. She however stated that the defence will be allowed to cross examine the witness on September 26, when the PI continues.
According to reports, Sirmattie Ramnaress was found lying face down in the garage of her home on August 31, 2013. It was a blaze coming from the woman’s home that led firefighters to a bond, when they stumbled upon her body. Her body reportedly bore two stab wounds – one to the neck and another to the hip.
The police in a statement had said that Ramnaress’ house was ransacked and drenched with a flammable liquid, and a storage bond at the rear of the building was destroyed by fire.
Grant reportedly told detectives that he was hired and paid by Bailey to kill Ramnaress.
