Brazilian National, Mikaany Souza Meres was yesterday remanded to prison after pleading not guilty to unlawfully possessing ammunition. Meres appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The 26-year-old denied that on August 11, at Aishalton Village, she had.32 live ammunition in her possession, when she was not the holder of a firearm licence.
Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones told the court that the defendant was on her way to a camp on the day in question, when she stopped at the Aishalton Police Station to check in. Jones said that the ammunition was found concealed in Meres’ handbag.
According to the prosecutor, Meres was told of the offence committed and later charged.
The unrepresented woman, who spoke through the aid of an interpreter, stated that she resided in Boa Vista, Brazil, and came to Guyana to work as a cook for a mining camp.
When asked by Magistrate Azore if he had any objections to bail, Jones replied in the affirmative. He argued that the defendant is a flight risk since she has no ties to Guyana. He also argued that no special reasons were provided to satisfy the court.
Magistrate Azore upheld these objections and remanded Meres to prison, until September 8, when she will appear before the Chief Magistrate.
