Following months of intense pressure from several of his colleagues, the Regional Executive Officer (REO) of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) for Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne), Dr Veerasammy Ramayya, has tendered his
resignation.
Yesterday, the Ministry of Communities issued a release saying that Dr. Ramayya had tendered his resignation on August 10 and it goes into effect from September 15, 2016.
The Ministry stated that consequent to the REO’s resignation, it acknowledged receipt of the notice and expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dr Ramayya for his service to the Regional Democratic Council and the people of Region Six.
“Although his tenure at the region was short-lived, it has been a remarkable one.
The Ministry wishes to assure the people of Region Six that no effort will be spared to ensure the region is provided with a replacement with the administrative skill to deliver the effective leadership to the region in the provision of services.”
Dr. Ramayya a few months ago was accused by Vice Chairman of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Dennis DeRoop, of walking off the job. DeRoop had told Kaieteur News that the REO had abandoned his post, leaving the Council in a state of disarray, resulting in works being stalled in Region Six.
The Ministry of Communities had subsequently issued a letter to the Council stating that Dr. Ramayya had requested two weeks’ leave. DeRoop, meanwhile, had opined that the REO “could not handle the job, was buckling under pressure and was ducking from his duties”.
However, his claims were heavily opposed by a Representative of the Coalition Government in Berbice, Gobin Harbhajan, who had demanded that DeRoop issue an apology, since he would have summoned a meeting to ‘spout nonsense’.
Harbhajan, via a release, had stated that the Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Ministry, Emil McGarrell, had confirmed that Dr. Ramayya had applied for, and was granted official leave.
Consequently, Harbhajan said that he did not see how works were being stalled in the Region when there are two Deputy Regional Executive Officers, and an Accounts Department fully staffed and functioning.
Harbhajan had also stated that everything DeRoop had said was nothing but “shameless lies” all aimed to soil Dr. Ramayya’s character.
Meanwhile, Harbhajan made contact with this publication yesterday stating that over the past year, Dr. Ramayya had been faced with a ‘lot of negative challenges from the opposition’ and was not getting the cooperation from some of the top RDC Members because the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has ‘dominated’ the region with some top office bearers who were giving him very little support.
He added also, that even a few members from A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance for Change (APNU/AFC) from the region were giving him ‘challenges’.
“Last week he invite me to his office and spoke about the negatives and problems he is facing and said that he will be resigning, so I told him to stay focused and do the right thing and don’t be distracted. At many RDC Meetings, of which I’m a Councilor, 50% of the discussion was about him from the opposition bench. Many times I stood up and defend him and asked Councilors to give him a chance to execute his duties but I was outnumbered.”
He added also that the REO was criticized because of his qualifications. He opined that an REO does not need a ‘Master’s Degree’ to run a region but rather, experience and vision to grow and to take the Region forward.
