The Guyanese athletes under Manager Kathleen Paul left these shores on Saturday last in search of more glory. The athletes are seasoned campaigner Karel Mars along with Erwyn Smith and the lone female athlete, the promising, Andrea Alicia Smith.
Ms Smith will be competing in the Women’s 63kg Open Division which was scheduled for yesterday and was intent on obliterating the current Squat and Deadlift records in her division which stand at 160kg (352lbs) and 142.5kg (314lbs) respectively.
Mr. Smith will be competing in the Men’s 93kg Open Division today, while Mars will also be in action today.
In a release from the federation, the body noted that Team Guyana was plagued with sponsorship issues for this engagement but as a result of a few corporate entities and some individuals, the participation of the trio was made reality.
The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPG) had initially shortlisted a squad of 22 athletes comprising of 19 athletes and 3 officials. The team was reduced after the competitions organizers changed the format.
The team was further reduced due to sponsorship issues which found the athletes applying for individual sponsorship even as the federation appealed to Corporate Guyana and the Government, the GAPF noted.
After much difficulty in the last week leading up to competition, Rawndell Clementson and Johnny Seecharran were left off the team after Government opted to sponsor the airfare for the lone female athlete, the federation informed.
The governing body for the sport says it wishes to extend gratitude to all those who made the participation of the 4-member team possible. These are the Public Utilities Commission, International Pharmaceutical Agency, Demerara Harbour Bridge Ltd., Guyoil, Evan’s Brother Automotive, Hand in Hand, Digicel, Tower Suites, Demerara Mutual, Caribbean Airlines and Sookraj Cambio.
