Stacy Hamilton, a fugitive from the United States of America, was yesterday sentenced to a total
of 36 months imprisonments by Magistrate Fabayo Azore, after pleading guilty to two counts of conspiring to commit a felony, after she appeared before a city court.
The 44-year-old woman from Houston, Texas, admitted that between January 1 and August 12, at Georgetown, with intent to defraud, she conspired with persons known or unknown to forge a Guyana passport in the name Tara Maughn. She also admitted that on August 12, at the Lethem Police Station, she presented the fake passport to an immigration officer.
Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones told the court that Hamilton is wanted in the US for pending matters she has before the court. He said that the woman entered Guyana via the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on January 1. He said it was while in Guyana, she conspired with persons to forge the travel document.
The prosecutor related that on August 12, while at the Lethem checkpoint, Hamilton was stopped by an immigration officer and admitted that she had bought the fake passport for US$1,500 from a man. She further told the immigration officer that she intended to use the passport to travel to Brazil.
Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat represented the foreign national. He stated that his client has been living in Guyana for more than one year at Grove, East Bank Demerara. The lawyer disclosed that US officials have already made contact with Hamilton.
Having considered the woman’s early guilty plea and the seriousness of the offence, the Magistrate sentenced Hamilton to 18 months imprisonment on each charge.
The prison terms will run concurrently.
Magistrate Azore ordered that Hamilton be deported upon completing the jail terms.
