Vagrants who had occupied the abandoned Nurses Hostel at Charles place New Amsterdam are being blamed for a fire which destroyed the inner portion of the two storey building on Friday.
According to residents, the building was left unused since it was abandoned by the previous government.
After awhile vagrants started to occupy the property, although it was still receiving electricity and despite their many complaints, nothing was done.
A resident said she was at home when she noticed smoke coming from the building. When she looked over she saw a vagrant known as “Country” in the house. She enquired about the smoke and ‘Country’ said he was burning “marabuntas”.
The woman said she told him to be careful and a few minutes later she noticed the smoke had intensified and decided to investigate.
It was then she saw the building on fire.
By then ‘Country’ had fled.
She raised an alarm and the Guyana Fire responded minutes after with two trucks. A unit from the Guyana Sugar Corporation-Rose Hall Estate also responded.
According to Officer in charge Patrick Carmichael, they received a call at approximately 13:15 hrs and responded within minutes. The water was sourced from a nearby fire hydrant and the Republic Road trench.
He said that all the supporting agencies including the Guyana Police Force, GPL and GWI responded in a timely manner and assisted in keeping the situation under control.
Police are trying to locate “Country.”
